September 2004- Blue Moon News

"We are alive as the Earth is alive; we have the power to create our freedom
If we have the courage, we can be healers-like the moon we shall rise" ~unknown

Though the calendar definitely says fall, I write this newsletter while enjoying these last days of Indian summer we are having near the Atlantic Ocean. The beach is deserted and I wish it could last. We are now entering the dark half of the year, the birth of winter. For me, this is my time to truly listen to the goddess with my mind, body & soul. I feel a little sadness as I prepare for winter, as I have never been a cold weather person. (If the Farmers Almanac is to be believed we, in the east are going to have record cold and snow). But fall also brings on a season of introspection. With the cold temperatures and decreasing sunlight, we move inside and our physical activity tends to slow down. We even eat differently. Soups, to warm us up; orange foods such as sweet potatoes, yams, carrots and ginger to strengthen our chi; reducing the ice and cold in our diets. Now we are ready to begin our journey of introspection. This fall look around you…hear the wind whispering through the trees, walk through the falling leaves and watch the animals preparing their winter havens. Our surroundings remind us strongly of nature's power and energy and it's effect on our well-being. So if you usually find yourself dreading those long dreary winters, try something new. Embrace this time as yours. Pick something you have always wanted to do, a subject you have always wished to research or a place you have always wanted to visit. Whatever-just allow your thoughts to fly. This turn of the year promises a season of excitement for all of us. Hoping each and every one of you had a most merry Mabon!

What is Ayurvedic Indian Head Massage?

As a practitioner, I am always being asked about this wonderful treatment. Well, the earliest mention appears in Ayurvedic texts dating back 4000 years ago. Traditionally, it was used as a method to keep hair healthy since the Vedas believed that manipulation of the scalp promoted hair growth. Today the method includes treatment of the Marma points along the upper back, shoulders, neck, arms and face. Marma is a word used in ancient Indian scripture to describe the points where our muscles, nerves and joints meet. Texts note 107 Marma points on the body, the major ones corresponding to the major chakras. An interesting fact- 37 of them are found in the head and neck alone! Benefits include:

  • Good effective way to apply essential and base massage oils such as coconut, sesame & olive
  • General & specific relaxation of muscles & whole body
  • Loosening of the scalp
  • Dispersal of toxins from tense knotted muscles
  • Improved circulation of blood & stimulation of the lymphatic system
  • Help in the relief of tension headaches
  • Excellent for insomnia
  • Relief of mental and emotional stress & improves concentration

You Asked?
Kristen asks "what is Copal and why do I use it in many blends"? Copal is a resin that originated in South America and looks quite similar to frankincense tears or beads. Used in ritual for purification, it is also considered by many to strengthen the heart center. I find it very relaxing. By the way, for you incense lovers, Copal incense has an excellent effect on those suffering from anxiety.

Hints for cold weather care...
Did you know that Eucalyptus oil was used in French hospitals as far back as the 19th century to affect respiratory conditions?

And Basil oil while great for clearing the head and giving your mind a sense of strength and purpose also boosts the immune system against colds and flu.

Questions

Sandra, a client, asked, "I have been using the Letting Go Myst with terrific results. How does a vibrational or energetic blend work?"

Well Sandra, we start with organic herbs, flower essences, essential oils, gem essences and crystals all of which are wondrous vibrational tools used to balance the energy centers or chakras. Crystals have healing properties that are determined by the frequency they vibrate at, while essential oils, plant world elixirs, also vibrate at different rates. When they merge there is a significant shift or increase in healing properties noted. Vibrational blends empower and connect us with the botanical world and mineral spirits, creating an invisible energy that forms the bond between you and your elixir allowing healing to take place...Aroma Magick

"Sisters of the great parade, we have bannered our way through centuries of risk & ridicule
Our grass roots have become giant redwoods gathering strength over time
Bracing against those who would fell us without thought of our contribution to this world.
Our trickle has become the powerful river of change giving sustenance and hope to all living beings
We know that each community we work with worldwide accords an ounce of peace on which to build a planet of peace" ~Jane Evershed

According to a great Indian sage, whenever the world has undergone massive spiritual upheaval, there are more souls born who choose to incarnate in female bodies. Women act as change-agents. They embody the Goddess. Nurturance, harmony, compassion and the theory of "right relationship" are biologically rooted in women. In this fragmented society, it is no wonder that the collective power of women is now being directed toward the caring administration of a peaceful world. Women need to empower themselves, as never before if we are to end centuries of living in the background. Please step forward and find your voice.
